Why I Won’t Send a Proposal Without Context

A few weeks ago, I fell into a TikTok rabbit hole.

You know the kind. Someone casually mentions an “adulting” spreadsheet and suddenly you’re questioning your entire life.

This woman had a list of things I had either never thought about or very much avoided. Did you know front-load washers have a drain tube you’re supposed to empty monthly? Because I did not. She also had basics like testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, checking appliance ages, and understanding when big home systems need maintenance versus replacement.

So naturally, I made my own adulting list and decided to actually do the things.

One of those things was figuring out how old our furnace is and whether we should be maintaining it more intentionally. I called our HVAC company, a guy came out, and honestly, he was great. He explained what we have, what’s aging, what’s fine, and what I should be planning and budgeting for long term.

I felt informed and calm.

And then about an hour later, I got three separate proposal emails.

No explanation.

No prioritization.

No context.

Just line items. Some of them in the five-figure range.

Because I already trust this company, I replied and asked them to help me understand which services I actually need, how often, and what the priority is. But if this were someone I didn’t already know? I would have been overwhelmed. And probably not a client.

That experience hit me hard, because it’s exactly why I refuse to send proposals without a Strategy Session.

I don’t mind sharing pricing ranges. That’s respectful. What I won’t do is tell someone what their business should spend money on without actually being inside it with them.

Because context matters.

Sequencing matters.

And a list of options without explanation isn’t strategy. It’s anxiety.

Sometimes the right answer is one thing.

Sometimes it’s a few things that need to happen together, in the right order.

And sometimes what looks like the problem is actually just a symptom of something deeper.

That’s why every client starts with a Strategy Session here. Not as a hoop to jump through, but as the foundation that makes every recommendation make sense.

If you’re clear on what’s wrong but stuck on what to do next, this is exactly the stage where strategy helps.

No pressure.

No proposals dropped in your inbox without explanation.

Just clarity, sequencing, and a plan that actually fits.
